On February 18, 1952 , a major Nor'easter hit New England , punch cities along the East coast and wreak havoc on a ship trapped in a deadly path , including the SS Pendleton , T – 2 oil tanker to Boston , which literally ripped in half , trapping more than 30 sailors in the fast sinking its stern . As the senior officer on board , first assistant engineer Ray Sybert ( Casey Affleck ) soon realized it was up to him to take over the crew fear and inspires people to put aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms ever to hit the East Coast.
